NFL Power Rankings: Washington Redskins Crack Top…

    Read More: Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins have cracked the top 10 in one prominent NFL Power Rankings list after their Week 4 win over the St. Louis Rams. Brian Billick, writing for FOX Sports, has moved the Redskins up to No. 10 overall on his list, a three-spot rise from last week. Here is what he has to say about the Redskins.

The Redskins continue to prove they are a solid football team. Beating St. Louis doesn’t necessarily prove anything, but you still have to beat the bad teams on your schedule. After the bye, they have a big divisional home game against Philly, and then hit the road for two weeks.

Tenth is a good place to be for the Redskins, considering they haven’t always looked great in winning games this season. The other NFC East teams come in at No. 14 (New York Giants), No. 17 (Dallas Cowboys) and No. 19 (Philadelphia Eagles).

NFL Power Rankings: Are the Washington Redskins…

NFL Power Rankings are notoriously flexible at the start of each season, but for fans of the Washington Redskins the last few years have been depressingly consistent. No matter what part of the season the perennial cellar dwellers of the NFC East have appeared on the list, they have found themselves in an all too familiar place. The Bottom.

However, this year might just be different. The Washington Redskins went 3-1 in the preseason against quality teams. They beat Pittsburgh, Indianapolis and Tampa Bay. In the all important game three of preseason, the first string Redskins outscored the first string Baltimore Ravens, only to fall in the last minute as the second string and rookies played for roster spots. Graham Gano is the leading scorer in the NFL through the four games of preseason for goodness sakes! This is not the Redskins team everyone thought they were.

Surely the NFL Power Rankings will reflect that, right? Well, no sorry to say, but as of Sunday, September 4th, the Redskins are still in last place in the NFC East. But don’t hang your head just yet Redskins fans. Very few sports outlets will bother to change rankings based off of the preseason performances of the teams, but there is reason for optimism. One of the only post preseason Power rankings over at NFL Soup has the Redskins a modest 25th. Modest that is, until you remember almost everyone had them worse before preseason.

The bad news? In that same ranking the next closest NFC East team is Dallas, at position 14. The good news? The teams Washington beat in the preseason? Third, 10th and 16th respectively.

ESPN had Washington at 29th before the preseason. Fox Sports had them 26th. National publications have had no problem picking the Redskins to end the season with as few as 2 wins. In the quarterback oriented NFL, a team that can’t decide between Rex Grossman and some stranger named John Beck will not get any respect until they earn it with marks in the “W” column. Be prepared to stay near the bottom of the NFL Power Rankings until the halfway point of the season. By then, either the Redskins will have shown they belong in the mix, or not. Week one against the Giants will be a telling game.

There should be a whole slew of new rankings coming out this week, but don’t count on any surprising moves against the other teams of the NFC East. If the Washington Redskins want to overtake their rivals in the NFL Power Rankings, they’re just going to have to beat them on the field.

Washington Redskins Insane for Benching Rex…

John Beck is apparently back with the starters in Washington Redskins practice.

That’s a bit of a surprise, considering Rex Grossman actually looked pretty good in the Redskins’ preseason game.

Grossman was 19-for-26 for 207 yards and a touchdown on Friday night, one of his best performances in a Redskins’ uniform.

And, according to Gregg Rosenthal of NBC Sports, Beck hasn’t looked very good since coming back from injury:

“Rex Grossman looked good as the team’s starter in the preseason opener, but he’s running with the backups. Beck is back with the starters, although he looked rusty following his groin injury.”

But, the thing about the Redskins QB competition is that, no matter how bad Beck looks, he still has a good shot of winning the competition.

According to the same NBC Sports article, the Redskins might not declare an official starter for a couple more weeks:

“This is a big week for Beck. If he’s going to be the starter, he needs to stay healthy, show progress in practice, and have a positive preseason outing. The Redskins may not wind up declaring a starter until after the third preseason game.”

Who should be the Redskins starting QB?

Who should be the Redskins starting QB?

    • Rex Grossman

    • John Beck

    • Kellen Clemens

    • Brett Favre

    • They should just punt when they get the ball on offense

Even though Beck threw several errant passes in his first practice back and was booed by fans, he can still win back the favor of the team with a bad outing from Grossman.

It seems that Beck is the QB that the team wants to work with. The coaches seem to think he has more potential than Grossman.

But he’s one injury or bad outing away from landing in head coach Mike Shanahan’s doghouse.

However, even though Grossman had a pretty good first preseason game, he’s probably still in Shanahan’s doghouse from last season.

Eventually, the Redskins are going to run out of quarterbacks for Shanahan to get mad at. Someone has to be the starting quarterback in Washington, and it’s not going to be third-stringer Kellen Clemens.

Therefore, either Beck or Grossman will end up starting.

It might as well be Grossman, who has been healthy and has actually looked decent in practice and the first preseason game.

Grossman has more experience than Beck and slightly better accuracy. He gives the Redskins a slightly better chance of winning games this year, though Beck might have more potential for the future.

The Redskins would be crazy (unless Beck seriously steps up his game) not to let Grossman start the season and try to make his NFC East championship prediction come true.

It’s not an ideal quarterback battle, but it’s happening, and the Redskins need to choose Grossman and give him support throughout the 2011 NFL season.

    That’s all for today.

Redskins Owner Dan Snyder Responds To City Paper’s…

Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder has been waging a legal war with the Washington City Paper for many months now over a story that appeared in that newspaper — Dave McKenna’s “The Cranky Redskins Fan’s Guide To Dan Snyder.” Months after the article had been published, read, enjoyed, and forgotten about, Snyder got this idea in his head — put there by his P.R. lackey, Tony Wyllie — that he should take the paper to court over the matter, and ensure that the original article got an even wider audience than it ever had on its own.

When last we left this saga, the Washington City Paper had filed its response to the suit in D.C. court. The response had two key features. First, the paper made clear its intentions to seek a swift dismissal of the case on the grounds that it was, in essence, a strategic lawsuit against public participation, or “SLAPP” suit. SLAPP suits basically entail an attempt from a deep-pocketed plaintiff to intimidate critics in the public square by threatening them with onerous, potentially bankrupting legal claims. As it happens, Washington, D.C., has enacted a very strong anti-SLAPP statute — the City Paper is the first defendant to put it to the test.

The second feature of the City Paper‘s filing was an extensive collection of supporting material, serving to back up McKenna’s original reporting on matters that both pertain to the suit’s specifics as well as the total body of work in the article itself.

Now, Snyder has countered with a filing of his own. The City Paper‘s managing editor, Mike Madden, summarizes it thusly:

In a response to our motion, filed last night shortly before an 11:59 p.m. deadline, Snyder argues the anti-SLAPP law is unconstitutional, because the D.C. Council didn’t have the authority to pass it; that even if it is constitutional, it doesn’t apply in this case; that he’s going to win the lawsuit; and that our special motion to dismiss was frivolous.

“This motion was brought solely to delay these proceedings and to put pressure on Mr. Snyder to settle his claims,” the filing reads. “Defendants’ ‘Hail Mary’ should not be rewarded.”

That “Hail Mary” line is awfully rich coming from a guy whose team is planning to start Rex Grossman at quarterback in the coming season.

But I digress. The good news, I suppose, is that Snyder’s legal team is implicitly acknowledging the fact that they’re attempting to mount a strategic lawsuit against public participation. That’s a matter from which they can’t run. In their initial filing against Atalya Capital Management, the hedge fund that sits atop the corporate pyramid owns the City Paper, Snyder’s lawyers indicated as much when they wrote: “We presume defending such litigation would not be a rational strategy for an investment firm such as yours. Indeed, the cost of litigation would presumably quickly outstrip the value of the Washington City Paper.”

Wyllie even went in front of an “Ethics in Sports Media” panel and said: “Some people ask, are you firing a warning shot at other members of the media, and I’d say yes.”

Snyder’s legal team also clearly did not enjoy having to page through the reams of supporting material that the City Paper sent along in support of their original reporting. That’s understandable, considering how well it backs up McKenna. So, in a novel legal motion of their own, they’re seeking to have the evidence thrown out and are insisting that the City Paper now pay the costs of having to read it in the first place.

(FULL DISCLOSURE: Articles I have posted on these pages continue to find their way into the legal filings of both sides. Thanks for the clicks, lawyers!)

TBD has the essential rundown of what Snyder is objecting to and why.

The bad news here is that Snyder’s chances of prevailing over the city’s anti-SLAPP statute aren’t that bad. The Washington Post‘s Erik Wemple wrangled the opinion of one legal eagle yesterday, and the long and the short of it is that the city’s footing, in terms of passing their own laws and fulfilling self-governance, is never that secure. In this case, the Home Rule Act that allows for the D.C. Council to exist in the first place effectively neuters D.C. lawmakers by barring them from enacting rules that govern local courts.

Madden notes that City Paper has gained the support of two D.C. Councilmembers, who will defend their anti-SLAPP statute.

By opening up another legal front against the D.C. Council, Snyder’s legal team is taking a difficult case and making it more complicated. For the gang that couldn’t even spell McKenna’s name right in their own briefs, this edges very close to “reach-exceeds-grasp” territory.

But even if Snyder succeeds in the legal realm, the recent filing is another major failure in the world of public relations. There’s almost nothing that rubs Washingtonians more raw than reminders of the limitations imposed on their representation in Congress and their rights to pursue self-governance. This legal tactic may help Snyder avoid a quick dismissal of his suit, but it’s sure to alienate Redskins fans who reside in the District.

Of course, there is a rich tradition of Redskins owners alienating Washingtonians — former owner George Preston Marshall did it with racism. For more on how Snyder continually alienates Redskins fans, might I recommend McKenna’s “Cranky Guide”?

The Redskins will begin what promises to be another season of mediocrity on Sept. 11, when they play the New York Giants at FedEx Field in Landover, Md.

NFL Free Agency Rumors: Washington Redskins Still…

Read More: Santana Moss (WR – WAS), Santonio Holmes (WR – NYJ), New York Jets, Washington Redskins

The Washington Redskins opened the 2011 NFL free agency by re-signing wide receiver Santana Moss, but it appears they are still looking to upgrade the wide receiver position. Despite keeping Moss, they are still chasing New York Jets wide receiver Santonio Holmes, according to multiple reports.

First, CSN Washington’s Rich Tandler reports that the Redskins are still chasing Holmes, based on his reports.

I have been hearing that the Redskins signing of Santana Moss will not preclude the Redskins pursuit of Jets free agent receiver Santonio Holmes.

Later, ESPN’s Adam Schefter, in a radio interview and on SportsCenter, suggested the same thing, saying the Moss signing did not impact the Redskins’ pursuit of Holmes. However, he also said that the Jets are hoping to keep Holmes, and he expects a deal between Holmes and the Jets to be completed later Wednesday.

Washington Redskins Training Camp Schedule 2011:…

    Read More: Washington Redskins

It looks like Washington Redskins training camp will actually begin on Thursday, July 28, at least as of right now. FOX Sports’ Jay Glazer is reporting that the players are expected to sign a new CBA Monday to end the NFL lockout. Under that timeline, 10 teams would open camp Wednesday, 10 Thursday, 10 Friday and the remaining two on Saturday.

The reason for the discrepancy is that each will open exactly 15 days before their preseason opener. The Redskins are scheduled to begin their preseason on August 12, so therefore, they would be one of the teams that opens on Thursday.

Previous reports suggested Redskins training camp would begin on Saturday, but under Glazer’s timeline, the Redskins would be opening Thursday. The other teams to open Thursday would be the Pittsburgh Steelers, Miami Dolphins, Atlanta Falcons, Cincinnati Bengals, Detroit Lions, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Kansas City Chiefs, San Francisco 49ers and New Orleans Saints.

Jul 24, 2011 – With the news that the NFL players are expected to end the NFL lockout and approve a new collective bargaining agreement on Monday, we can start to get an idea of when Washington Redskins training camp begins. Training camps cannot begin until seven days after a new agreement is reached, according to CBS Sports’ Mike Freeman. According to that timeline, the Redskins’ training camp will begin on Monday, August 1.

That would at least be the official start date of training camp, though it is not the first time players can return to their team facilities. That will happen on Wendesday, assuming the new deal passes.

The Redskins will once again be holding training camp out in Ashburn, Va. An official schedule, with dates of open and closed practices, is not out yet. It also remains unclear how the projected start of NFL free agency on Saturday, July 30 will affect training camp.

Dan Snyder Inspires Lawmaker To Draft Legislation To Stop People From Doing Things Dan Snyder Does

Yesterday, we brought you word that Washington Redskins owner Dan Snyder — in his continuing effort to mount a revenge fantasy in the courts over an old article in the Washington City Paper titled “The Cranky Redskin Fan’s Guide to Dan Snyder” — had subpoenaed the Washington Post to obtain any or all communications between that piece’s author, Dave McKenna, and Post sports blogger Dan Steinberg. The subpoena request included “telegrams,” because it is apparently the 19th century.

For Snyder and his P.R./legal team, it’s growing more and more apparent that this entire effort is aimed at intimidating the media. That’s sort of an understatement, actually.

This whole matter began with Snyder’s attorney warning the hedge fund that owned the City Paper‘s publisher, “We presume defending such litigation would not be a rational strategy for an investment firm such as yours. Indeed, the cost of litigation would presumably quickly outstrip the value of the Washington City Paper.”

And only last April, Snyder’s flack, Tony Wyllie actually told an “Ethics in Sports Media” panel, “Some people ask, are you firing a warning shot at other members of the media, and I’d say yes.”

In other words, Snyder is mounting what is known as a strategic lawsuit against public participation (also known as a “SLAPP” suit), which is defined as “a lawsuit that is intended to censor, intimidate and silence critics by burdening them with the cost of a legal defense until they abandon their criticism or opposition.” And Snyder’s may be the most ham-handed SLAPP suit of all time, given that they keep publicly telegraphing these specific intentions, and have moved their case to the District of Columbia, a notoriously unfriendly place for SLAPP plaintiffs.

But it gets better! An attentive reader brought something to my attention that I had missed: Rep. Steve Cohen (D-Tenn), announced last week in Roll Call that he was going to draft legislation to provide anti-SLAPP protection for all Americans by federal mandate. And you’ll never guess who inspired Cohen to act:

Washington Redskins fans no doubt have been enjoying the ongoing legal battle between team owner Dan Snyder and the Washington City Paper, which published a disparaging column about Snyder and his ownership of the Redskins. But Snyder’s lawsuit against the newspaper highlights a much more serious issue — the need for federal legislation to protect the First Amendment rights of all Americans against strategic lawsuits against public participation, or SLAPPs.

The City Paper’s column was admittedly harsh but well within the bounds of free speech, especially about a public figure. Snyder was understandably angry, but instead of fighting speech with more speech, he chose to use the courts for his personal revenge. Whatever you may think of Snyder and the Redskins, the courts are not the appropriate forum for resolving these sorts of grudges.

Cohen’s legislation is called the PETITION Act (which stands for “Protecting the Expression and Transmission of Ideas and Thoughts In Our Nation Act”), and it would provide a means to put an end to merit-less SLAPP suits before they become too costly for defendants by granting SLAPP victims the means to seek early dismissals, postpone discovery requests and recover costs.

“This bill does not shut the courthouse door to those with valid claims,” Cohen says. “It merely provides an expedited process for filtering out suits designed to intimidate and harass citizens exercising their First Amendment rights.”

If enacted, this law will be the first time Dan Snyder’s actions achieved a positive societal outcome.

    Redskins’ Haynesworth Has Case Dismissed

    By SportsDirect

A road-rage assault charge against Washington Redskins defensive tackle Albert Haynesworth was dimissed Tuesday by a northern Virginia judge after Haynesworth reached a settlement with the alleged victim. Virginia law states that a judge can dismiss a misdemeanor assault charge under the “accord and satisfaction” provision, when a victim says they have been made whole (usually by a financial payment). Police say a man made a gesture at Haynesworth for tailgating him. The two later stopped their vehicles and Haynesworth allegedly got out of his pickup truck and punched the man. Details of the agreement were not made public.
