Most of the intriguing personal stuff about Washington Redskins quarterback John Beck was learned during those time-killing days of the NFL lockout. He’s an Eagle scout. He spent two years as Mormon missionary in Portugal.

Seems like just the other day the Washington Redskins were 3-1 and alone atop the NFC East. Actually, now that I think about it, it was just the other day the Redskins were 3-1 and alone atop the NFC East.

It’s the little things that help turn an expected also-ran into a surprise first-place team. Take the story of Washington Redskins right guard Chris Chester — and how a subtle change in how he used his hand on a running play was seen as a milestone. It seems when offensive line coach Chris Foerster was reviewing video from the 17-10 win over the St.

Four games are in the books, and the Washington Redskins have reached their bye week. The jury still is out on this team as three-quarters of the season remains. But we’ll take this time to evaluate the team at its current state

At this point, I don’t think it’s hard to argue the fact that the Redskins’ offensive line is a bit shaky. By all statistical accounts, the line isn’t nearly as bad as others around the league, ranking 16th in run-blocking and 15th in pass-protection, according to Football Outsiders. But doesn’t anyone else get the feeling, just by watching the games, that the offensive line has some upgrading to do before anyone considers the Redskins a legitimate contender? Second-year left tackle Trent Williams has flashed signs of brilliance, but overall he’s still working to prove his draft value

The Washington Redskins have a new center this season in Will Montgomery, who moved from guard to anchor the line in 2011, and while the former Virginia Tech standout can make all the protection calls, he has some adjusting to do when it comes to shotgun snaps. Off and on throughout the preseason, and again during last week’s season opener, quarterback Rex Grossman had to adjust to a couple of close-call low and high snaps while lining up in shotgun formation.

First, the wide receivers: Though there are eight listed, Shanahan said he considers second-year player Brandon Banks only as a return specialist — a role in which he excelled last year and one in which he returned a punt 95 yards for a touchdown in last week’s preseason finale against Tampa Bay. Banks has battled a balky left knee since last season, a factor in Shanahan’s thinking. “He’s a guy that I’m even afraid to really practice as a wide receiver, because that knee swells up,” Shanahan said.

The Washington Redskins will travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens in a Thursday night NFL preseason game. Despite a lot of criticism, the Redskins will enter this game with a 2-0 record, having beaten the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts. Granted, it’s only the preseason right now, and the Redskins are still trying to figure out who will start the season opener against the New York Giants. For a team that has gone through some identity changes this past year, the preseason games are very crucial.
