Washington Redskins coach Mike Shanahan expects to use either second-year pro Anthony Armstrong or rookie Niles Paul at the starting wide receiver spot previously occupied by Santana Moss, who is expected to miss five to seven weeks after breaking his left hand.

John Beck was able to stretch the field against the Eagles which was something Rex was unable to do. Beck took multiple shots down the field in an attempt to move the ball. He had a beautiful throw to Terrence Austin for 32 yards to set up his rushing touchdown. Beck also threw deep to Gaffney (dropped), Stallworth (dropped), and Fred Davis (bad throw). At least the Redskins were taking shots downfield. Whenever Rex dropped back in a five- or seven-step drop, it seemed that the Skins were doomed for a check-down throw or a wobbly interception. The most frustrating thing in the world is seeing Rex check-down and throw a five-yard pass on third-and-10. With Beck there was none of that. If it was a third- or fourth-and-long, he was throwing it past the marker

After leading the Washington Redskins with 11 catches for 141 yards and a touchdown during the preseason and then getting passed over in each of his team’s first four weeks of the season, second-year receiver Terrence Austin finally got a chance to make a play on Sunday. Austin hauled in a 32-yard grab from John Beck and was tackled at the two-yard line. The big catch marked Beck’s longest completion of his 15 attempts and set Washington up to score on the next play when Beck scrambled for a touchdown.

The Washington Redskins have nine rookies on the 53-man roster, but their group of veterans is deep also – when healthy. Monday represented some semblance of good news in that department as tight end Chris Cooley and safeties LaRon Landry and Oshiomogho Atogwe practiced.

First, the wide receivers: Though there are eight listed, Shanahan said he considers second-year player Brandon Banks only as a return specialist — a role in which he excelled last year and one in which he returned a punt 95 yards for a touchdown in last week’s preseason finale against Tampa Bay. Banks has battled a balky left knee since last season, a factor in Shanahan’s thinking. “He’s a guy that I’m even afraid to really practice as a wide receiver, because that knee swells up,” Shanahan said.

The Washington Redskins cut their roster down to 53 players Saturday, but with eight receivers and no backup guards, it’s obvious that this isn’t the roster Mike Shanahan will open the season with. At this very moment, Redskins front office officials are working the phones as they look to improve different parts of the team.

Last night’s preseason game between the Washington Redskins and Baltimore Ravens was a thriller. The Redskins jumped out to a 14-0 lead late in the first quarter, but the Ravens fought back and QB Tyrod Taylor led them to victory in the final seconds, hitting WR Brandon Jones for a 9-yard touchdown. Here are 10 Redskins that stood out in the game: WR Terrence Austin : Austin was fighting for a roster spot coming into this game. The Washington Redskins will travel to Baltimore to face the Ravens in a Thursday night NFL preseason game. Despite a lot of criticism, the Redskins will enter this game with a 2-0 record, having beaten the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Indianapolis Colts. Granted, it’s only the preseason right now, and the Redskins are still trying to figure out who will start the season opener against the New York Giants. For a team that has gone through some identity changes this past year, the preseason games are very crucial.

Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said roster evaluations for key positions likely will extend to the fourth preseason game because of the lack of an offseason program this past summer. But in reality, the starting positions appear to be locked up for the most part. Heading into Thursday night’s preseason game against the Baltimore Ravens, the obvious position battle is quarterback, where John Beck and Rex Grossman are expected to split time with the starters, although Shanahan still won’t say who will start.

“In practice, you’re only catching three to five balls a day. That’s not enough balls,” Hankerson said. “So this helps.” For young wide receivers eager to earn one of the few roster spots with the Redskins, every little bit helps.
