The $100 Million Question: Is Haynesworth Worth It?

Wanting to sure up their defense, the Washington Redskins decided it would be a good idea to throw big bucks at defensive lineman Albert Haynesworth. It’s understandable that it would cost a lot of money to get the Pro-Bowler away from Tennessee Titans and with the offer he accepted, the Titans were not willing to match it and he walked. When he’s on the field, he’s definitely worth the investment as his presence alone creates problems for the opposing team and when he gets it going, he’s more than just a hole-clogger and a run-stopper. He has the ability to put pressure on the quarterback and make stops in the back field. That’s exactly what the Redskins are going to need out of Haynesworth if they don’t want to end up looking like fools for giving him so much money. He’s had injury issues as he’s yet to play a complete season since 2002-03 and if he begins to miss games, the Redskins will not be too fond of that.

Haynesworth wasn’t the only spending the Redskins did to fix their defense. Often disgruntled cornerback DeAngelo Hall too received a nice, big contract from the Redskins this off-season. While it’s not as much as Haynesworth (about half, $54 Mill), this signing too is a high risk, high reward type of deal. If the cornerback can stay on the field, he’s a huge contributor although many view him as overrated as he hasn’t had quite the career many expected from him. This is probably his last chance to turn things around as every team who’s taken a chance on him has eventually let him go before his contract was up.
